Who Are Eye Doctors? The term “eye doctor” encompasses two main types of eye care professionals: optometrists and ophthalmologists. While both specialise in diagnosing and treating vision-related issues, their roles and level of training differ.

Optometrists are primary eye care providers who examine, diagnose, treat, and manage disorders and diseases of the eye and visual system. They perform comprehensive eye exams, prescribe corrective lenses (glasses or contact lenses), and provide pre-and post-operative care for certain eye procedures.

Ophthalmologists, on the other hand, are medical doctors who specialise in eye and vision care. In addition to providing comprehensive eye exams and prescribing corrective lenses, they can diagnose and treat all eye diseases, perform eye surgery, and prescribe medications.
